FAQ
Can I download a TiddlyWiki HTML file with my android browser?
Yes, open a web page with a direct download link, long press on the link for context menu and select “Save link”. TiddlyWiki HTML file will saved in the download directory of your SD-Card. Example direct download link from tiddlywiki.com: An empty TiddlyWiki file
Can I prevent any screen layout issues like text overlays?
The original TiddlyWiki implementation is not optimized for small screen devices. You can …
- … use TiddlyWiki with horizontal screen orientation.
- … try to zoom out.
- … use an adaption for small screen devices like iTW – a TiddlyWiki for iPhone or better anyone wants to support a new TiddlyWiki adaption in more android look and feel like Google reader. :-)

Tiddlywiki is my favorite software. I am so glad I can use it in Android machine. I appreciate your job so much and I think you did a great job. And there is one thing to mention. If you can modify the Tiddlywiki into a “one column” version. It will make the maximum use of your software. Because Tiddlywiki is a three column pattern. This make the writing area because too small to edit. Although I have a 320×480 screen, I can’t write thing at all. If the left and right column can moved into central column. It will maximize the writing area and make the software very useful. Hope you can make a one column version of Tiddlywiki!
All the best to you!
02. August 2010 um 18:02
@Andy; Thank you for the feedback.
I am not sure, but the layout problem on small screen devices is not an AndTidWiki issue. Next version will include iTW an TiddlyWiki adaption for small screen devices and many features more.
The todo list is long, maybe I will try to resolve one column layout in a later version.
03. August 2010 um 13:24
great job for the android and Tiddlywiki user !!!!!!!!!!
17. August 2010 um 19:05
I love the program though I’ve run into the 3 column issue on my Droid 2. In landscape its fine if I zoom out, but everytime I zoom out then click something, it zooms back in again. can you make it so that when I zoom out it stays zoomed out? Otherwise I love it! Thanks!
18. August 2010 um 06:56
@Eric; Zooms on my Motorola Milestone by selecting any input field only?
23. August 2010 um 22:38
@mg; Yes, selecting any input field causes it to zoom back in. Its still workable, I just spend a lot of time zooming back out.
24. August 2010 um 06:02
@eric; try to modify your TiddlyWiki file and insert following meta tag to prevent default scaling.
24. August 2010 um 18:54
@mg; thanks, one more question. Where do I insert that tag? I’m assuming it would be one of the “shadowed” tiddlers, but I’m not quite sure which one it would go into.
24. August 2010 um 19:45
@eric; not one of the shadow tiddlers, the meta tag is an additional meta tag for the html-file.
Example:
Four different target-densitydpi options exits:
device-dpi
high-dpi
medium-dpi
low-dpi
My milestone scales by additional meta tag initial only and still zooms by selecting any input field.
Sorry, not sure to find an option to disable zoom handling?
24. August 2010 um 22:13
@mg; Thanks, I tried it but its still zooming in. Not sure what’s going on. Any other ideas?
25. August 2010 um 12:41
I’ve noticed that phone numbers when you click them launch the dialer (on my HTC Desire). No markup needed -apparently this is an Android feature. This works in some tiddlers, but in others it doesn’t, even if I copy exactly the same sentence which contains the number. How to ensure phone numbers are always clickable?
Btw -great app, thanks!
25. August 2010 um 17:49
@Eric; I have not other idea to resolve zoom-in by selecting any input field currently.
25. August 2010 um 17:52
@Josh; Not be able to click any number to launch the dialer?
Do you have an example?
25. August 2010 um 23:51
Launching the dialer works in most tiddlers (like it does with suitable numbers in other Andoid apps), but in some tiddlers of the same file it does not work.
One tiddler contains the following numbers which launch the dialer fine:
0123-45 6789
+12(345)678 90
But if I copy exactly these numbers to a NEW tiddler in the same file then none of them will launch the dialer. The problem affects the tiddler: in some tiddlers all suitable numbers work, in other tiddlers not any number works. Restarting AndTidWiki or the device does not change this behavior.
The problem occurs with all new tiddlers. However, if I continue adding info to a dysfunctional tiddler then after a couple of times saving the phone numbers do start to work. I have no idea what causes this change in behavior.
I hope this helps.
26. August 2010 um 06:54
@Josh; I try your examples with new and exiting tiddlers on my milestone, in an AVD (2.1-update1 & 2.2) and no number is selectable to launch the dialer.
Maybe provide a new example tiddlywiki file with selectable numbers to reproduce this behavior?

Hallo,
tolles Projekt.
03. September 2010 um 16:28
@mg: Danke für die schnelle Antwort. Funktioniert. Spitze!
03. September 2010 um 18:03
A little hint for everyone…
It took me a while to figure it out but it seems I can now fully automatically (min synch interval every 15min) replicate my wiki between android phone, notebook and online dropbox. Means full read/write access to it at any time from any place. Neat.
1) install AndTidWiki
2) move wiki file to SD card\dropbox
3) on android home screen (not in AndTidWiki) add shortcut; you will find AndTidWiki listed and can then choose the very file it should open
4) Install Dropbox app
5) install app “Ordner mit Dropbox synchen” (costs 50 cents)
6) install app “Wolschons Dropbox Konten”
7) configure “Ordner mit Dropbox synchen” so that it points to the dropbox directory you want to keep in synch
Note: The author (Marcus Wolschon) is stating very clearly that his app is in beta and as the synch tool is permitted to delete files using the app is at your own risk
03. September 2010 um 18:16
@AS; crazy workaround to get offline sync … :-)
Remember the amount of traffic depending on additional created backup files by TiddlyWiki.
08. September 2010 um 00:04
I would like to try this on my Entourage Edge, but it is not supported by the android marketplace. Is the Andtidwiki APK available as a local file?
Thanks,
+Paul
08. September 2010 um 07:24
@Paul; not today but send by mail.
How do you get your apps up to date without market?
08. September 2010 um 19:10
Yes! This is brilliant! Thanks for the App.
Entourage has their own app site:http://www.entourageedge.com/apps.html
It would be great to have AndTidWiki included there.
I’ve also used SlideMe etc; but mostly I gmail apks to myself and periodically check for updates by hand.
Awesome!
Installation was a breeze, and the latest TiddlyWiki loads and saves without issues on my Entourage Edge (Dingo Software). Next, I plan on migrating my existing server side TW to my Edge… I’ll keep you posted.
I’d also like to figure out how to open a given TW by default, or create a Tiddler that can open other TWs; shortcut to specific TWs etc.
Lots to play with now! : )
Thanks,
+Paul
09. September 2010 um 07:02
@Paul; I’m not be able to manage more and more app sites to distribute AndTidWiki, maybe your device manufactur get in Google Market?
09. September 2010 um 17:42
Are you presently charging for this download?
May I have your permission to distribute the .apk to other TiddlyWiki or Entourage Edge users?
Thanks,
+Paul
09. September 2010 um 18:10
@Paul; not charging presently anything for this download.
Permission to distribute the .apk?
AndTidWiki is Beta and I think a distributed publishing is suboptimal for any update?
Maybe I will publish this app at http://www.entourageedge.com/apps.html depending on conditions and feedback?
Still missing meta market to manage deployment once for many app sites.
09. September 2010 um 18:22
I would encourage you to publish it there as well. I understand that this is beta code, but I’d even pay for it as it stands.
Sorry, Distribute.. as in share with other Entourage users.
I agree that this is sub-optimal, but I didn’t want to “trade it around” if you were charging for it.
I’ve been using TW remotely for so long, I’m now really excited that I can have my notes local to my machine again.
+Paul
17. September 2010 um 10:53
May I also request a copy of the apk? I’m not allowed market access either. Thanks for your hard work.

thanks

Great app! I only found one problem so far. If I use the optical trackpad and I click on a link to a wiki page by pressing the trackpad, I get an error message: No activity found to handle event. Is this a known problem?
26. November 2010 um 12:23
@Matthias; cannot reproduce, any example more in detail? ;)
Danke!
29. November 2010 um 16:13
@kaeng; AAAA = eingebundene Binärdaten “favicon.ico”, Layout (Farben u.a.) über CSS ändern.
04. Dezember 2010 um 17:14
Is there a way I can sync and use this through Dropbox. I have another wiki installed on my Android phone that uses Dropbox for the sync. This is very useful and works great. Unfortunately the wiki is not very usable for my needs.
04. Dezember 2010 um 20:16
@Clinton; not native, by third tools only.
09. Dezember 2010 um 14:53
Another thing I just noted today: If I embed a link to a file that is in the andtidwiki folder on the sd card, it can not be opened from within the andtidwiki app. Using the browser works fine. Here is an example:
[[test.pdf|storage/test.pdf]]
I have created a directory storage in the andtidwiki folder with a file test.pdf in it. If I click on the link, I get the same “No activity found to handle event” error message.
05. Januar 2011 um 03:00
mg: Thank you for this app! I find it very useful on a myTouch4G.
@Clinton: yes, AS describes one way above (see ‘A little hint for everyone…’). I’ve had good results with a similar process, with only needed AndTidWiki and Dropbox apps:
1) install AndTidWiki app
2) install Dropbox app
3) Open Dropbox app and create a folder (e.g. /wiki)
4) from within dropbox/wiki, upload (add) my tiddlywiki file
5) now if i select the wiki file, Dropbox pulls the latest copy from the server, and android asks what program do i want to use to open it, giving AndTidWiki as an option.
6) I choose AndTidWiki and make edits.
7) Dropbox detects edits and uploads the file back to the server.
then on my home screen i created a shortcut to a Dropbox folder (/wiki) so I could launch Dropbox directly to the file, click on it, and edit some more.

12. Februar 2011 um 02:43
@mg:

I’d like to get the .apk file for AndTidWiki by email if still a possibility, as my Archos tablet has no access to Android market.
Thanks in advance.
18. Februar 2011 um 17:44
@altiplano; send by mail.
18. Februar 2011 um 22:07
Thanks mg. Just did a quick test with two existing TiddlyWiki files of mine, it went fine, except menu display which is somewhat ugly for the second file but this must be a “skin” / CSS problem – I have same problem with Opera while it’s OK w/ Firefox. This is related to the compact menu mode I’m using, I guess.
FYI my Archos tablet is a low cost machine on 1.5, screen is 8″ w/ 800×600 display. If you’d like me to do some specific tests, feel free to ask by mail. You can join TiddlyWiki files for display testing and so if needed.
Thanks again for this cool and useful app.
PS: if you plan to sell the app, how about using the ransom model (see link below) ? Once targetted amount of money reached, everyone could use it for free. This way people with machines unable to access Android market could use it.

20. Februar 2011 um 19:00
About the menu display problem I mentionned, I confirm that this issue is due to the modified TiddlyWiki version I use, which is a MPTW (a TiddlyWiki variation) with a different lay-out.
http://mptw.tiddlyspot.com/
This is solved for me by selecting the most compact theme : MptwTrim. With this theme the menu is reduced to a minimum : that’s a good point for us people using TiddlyWiki on small screens.
I’ll come back once I have enough AndTidWiki practice for a useful feedback ;)
24. Februar 2011 um 09:53
After a while playing with Tiddlywiki, you can easly modify the layout,
your sugestion is very good, with the template. thanks
another thing i did found (not tested) look very good to me

10. März 2011 um 19:11
Hi mg and thanks for this tool! I am using it on my Motorola Xoom, which works well with the default TiddlyWiki.
I have two minor bug reports.
1) Most apps — such as Dropbox — will offer to open a .html file in AndTidWiki. The Astro file manager, for some reason, will not.
2) The d3-sample from http://www.dcubed.ca/Welcome_to_d-cubed_files/d3-sample.zip doesn’t work right. The progress bar at the top of the screen gets to 50% but never gets past there. The app loads and displays fine, but will not save, and the AndTidWiki menu gets stuck. Force Close eventually is necessary.
Thanks,
– John
11. März 2011 um 06:24
@John; I can save (create new project => done) your example without any problem?
Do you have enough free space on sd?
I have to check the intent thrown for html files by astro file manger.
11. März 2011 um 16:38
Just tried it again.. I get the “It’s not possible to save changes” javaScript dialog when I try to save with d3. The “regular” TiddlyWiki instances work fine.
If you want me to email you the exact d3-sample.html I’m using, I could certainly do that. This is on Honeycomb on a Xoom, by the way.
Thanks!
12. März 2011 um 07:51
@John; please send me your d3-sample.html with a short description to mgsimon at mgsimon.de …

16. März 2011 um 22:43
I have sold my tablet and only used AndTidWiki a bit. I found it rather fast and reactive. My only disappointment is the lack of display orientation choice, between landscape and portrait mode (I have no idea how difficult this is code tbh) – I was on an 8″ tablet at 800×600 and that feature could be useful on 7″+ screen device. (Well its interest also depends on the theme/layout options of the TW file and the nature of tiddlers content.)
I may buy soon a new android tablet so I’ll keep an eye on AndTidWiki that is yet a great app.
17. März 2011 um 09:20
@altiplano; ?
… lack of display orientation choice, between landscape and portrait mode …
17. März 2011 um 09:56
I mean a rotation option, to choose between “horizontal” and “vertical” display.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Landscape_LCD_non-polarization.jpg
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Portrait_LCD_polarization.jpg
Such an option may be of low interest for smartphone users and on a big screen (7″ and more) it can give more comfort, more usability (without being crucial imo though).
Or does your question mark to me mean “Hey man, you should have looked better. This feature is already included” ? :) If so, sorry and shame on me!
20. März 2011 um 09:42
I forgot to mention my former tablet had no hardware orientation sensor (=accelerometer ?), that’s why I told a “rotate” button in AndTidWiki app menu would be cool.
21. März 2011 um 14:35
Hey!
Maybe anyone wants to support a new TiddlyWiki adaption for AndTidWiki in more android look and feel like Google reader. :-)

Great App that makes TiddlyWiki really usefull!
Since the system update to Android 2.3 recently, I experience some problems (Desire Z):
* curser moves to different place than positioned (not in other text apps)
* frames around title, text or tags field sometimes disappear (but still working)
* saving the tiddler leaves the edit dialog open. You can’t do anything except leaving the TiddlyWiki and re-opening it
Most disappointing is, that Android 2.3 is missing the pipe symbol in its keyboard map, which is often useful in TiddlyWiki to give a WikiLink another text.
30. Juli 2011 um 07:17
@essig, re missing pipe symbol, I need to tap the key labelled “12#”, then press the key labelled “1/2″ to get the second page of symbols which includes the pipe. Hope it works for you, too.
I was also frustrated by cursor positioning, more noticeable on larger tiddlers – maybe we’re not supposed to use large tiddlers :-) My workaround is to use the optical trackball on my HTC Wildfire; maybe your smartphone also has some alternative cursor positioning method that will help.
31. Juli 2011 um 10:18
Have many ideas to get more usability like native android app. But I’m not sure to make it with more android native or inject more JavaScript and CSS? Maybe like Google+ opened in mobile browser?

Hi,
Very nice! I’m using it with a tiddlywiki on dropbox from my Xoom tablet.
I use many embedded links to text and image files in my tiddlywiki folder on dropbox.
These links work fine in Linux & Windows browsers.
These links do not work with Andtidwiki on my Xoom. Any chance this
capability could be added? Thanks.

@Mike Smith; I need an example link to look for any possible solution.

Here are some examples of embedding images in tiddlers and linking to plain text files
in tiddlers. I use this approach to help keep the TiddlywWiki file smaller.
I include text like the following in a tiddler to display embedded png, jpg, or gif images:
TiddlyWiki also supports text like the following for displying embedded images in tiddlers:
[img[images/mifi2200.png]]The images directory is in the same directory as the tiddlywiki html file.
Including text like the following in a tiddler provides a link that opens the plain text file
in a new browser tab/window:
The files directory is in the same directory as the tiddlywiki html file.
Hope that helps.

@Mike Smith; OK, links to local static files does not work, but I checked embedding images without any problem.
In both cases icon.png shown. Do you ensure existing directory and image?

@mg,
Agree, embedded image links work fine. My issue with images appears to be related to a Dropbox basic quirk or limitation. Using the TiddlyWiki stored on the Xoom internal SD resolves the image problem. Sorry for the false alarm.
Perhaps linking to text or pdf files could be supported in the future?
Best Regards,
Mike

@Mike Smith; linking to text or pdf files could be resolved in the future, but you need an app to be handle any type of file.
I will look for a solution …

Hi! Do you give the source code to people? I’d like to write a similar application and make it send notifications based on the content of the tiddlywiki file. It would be easier if I could have your source code as a starting point.
Thank you!
19. Januar 2012 um 16:48
@Tiberius; you will not need the AndTidWiki source code to send notifications.
AndTidWiki is a container to support an interface to the filesystem.
I think you have to resolve your idea in TiddlyWiki with customized JavaScript.
Anyway up to date the source is not public hosted, but you can send me more information and maybe an JavaScript interface to AndTidWiki is possible?

@mg I want to write an application which starts a Service that scans the tiddlywiki html file every minute for tiddlers with the tag “calendar” and depending on the content of these tiddlers the service decides whether or not to emit notifications in the notification list(these tiddlers are like reminders and they contain the date and time when they should be remidned to the user via android notifications). When the user gets a notification from this Service and he taps it I want an AndTidWiki-like viewer to start with the tiddlywiki file loaded and with the tidder corresponding to that notification displayed. So I basically want to start your application from my application. But it would be nice to know how you implemented AndTidWiki so that I could integrate it in my app without having to call it as an external application.

@mg To be more specific, what I’d like to know is how you implemented that container and that interface to the file system.
